When I try to update my table I receive the following message:

THIS OPERATION IS NOT DEFINED FOR SYSTEM TABLES.
UNSUCCESSFUL METADATA UPDATE
TABLE NEW_TABLE
TOO MANY VERSIONS
CHANGES WILL BE ROLLED BACK

I´m using IBExpert. (There are 229 fields in the table)

You have modified that table 255 times since it was created. The alternatives are to backup and restore the database (best) or create an identical table, pump the data from that table to the new table, delete the old table, recreate it, and pump the data back.
